Visitors to the Centre

Visitors to the Centre are always welcome. Some come for quite long sabbatical periods of study. Many visitors, of course, come for much shorter periods of time, and others 'visit' only by remote access means. The Centre is gradually extending the range of support that it can provide at a distance for such people by exploiting available technology and multimedia to the full.

Dr Jose Carmona, University of Huelva, visited the Centre from 1 October 2008 - 31 January 2009.

Dealing with negative attitudes: Teaching Strategies to Improve Statistics Learning in Psychology Students

Dr Jose Carmona, Dept of Psychology, University of Huelva, Spain, worked at the RSSCSE from October 2008 - January 2009. He investigated problems associated with students being poorly motivated to learn statistics. Negative attitudes towards statistics often start with previous bad experiences in mathematics and become obstacles to the learning process in statistics. The goal was to design new teaching material and test some teaching strategies in a sample of psychology students in introductory statistics courses on his return to the University of Helva.

To dowload the PowerPoint presentation of a seminar on Cooperative Learning Dr Carmona gave to the RSSCSE on Friday 16 January 2009, click here. For the written version of the seminar (in English) click here. For the Spanish version click here (to come).

Results of running the designed experiment with students of psychology at the University of Huelva will appear on this site in due course.

Overseas Visitors

Visitors to the RSSCSE from overseas have included: Delia North (University of Natal); Beth Chance (California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo); Rob Gould (University of California, Los Angeles); Milo Schield (Augsburg College, Minneapolis); Dick Schaeffer (University of Florida); Chris Wild (University of Auckland); Helen MacGillivray (Queensland University of Technology); Soo Kong (ABS, Australia); Jackie Galpin (University of Witwatersrand); Siu-Ming Tam (ABS, Australia); Reinie Cordier (Statistics South Africa).

Interested in a Higher Degree?

Enquiries are invited from anyone interested in registering for a higher degree in order to specialise in statistical education. A wide range of research areas can be supported, and there are possibilities for either full- or part-time study. Partnership opportunities also exist for teachers who want to engage in active classroom research in their own contexts, with a view to developing their own understanding of the statistical teaching/learning process, and trying out new teaching processes, but not aimed at higher degree registration.
